Use of artificial intelligence

The Artificial Intelligence ((here in after referred to as AI)   usage policy and related technologies defines the norms and requirements for the use of artificial intelligence tools by authors, reviewers and members of the editorial board of the Journal “Advances in Materials Science” at the stages of preparation, submission, review and editing of scientific publications. The purpose of this policy is to ensure transparency, responsible conduct of scientific activity and compliance with international ethical standards of publications in accordance with:

    • Legislative field of Ukraine: New norms of the Law “On Academic Integrity” in Ukraine (https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/4742-20#Text) clearly regulate the use of automated systems, requiring transparency.
    • Journal policies: Publishers of the level of Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley have introduced strict protocols for reviewing manuscripts (https://www.elsevier.com/editor/perk/about-cope).
    • Taking into account reputational risks: Failure to declare the use of tools is now equated with concealing a conflict of interest.
Why AI cannot be an author: COPE and publishers’ positions
    • Who is an “author”?Authorship implies not only contribution to the work, but also the ability to be responsible for its content, approve the final version, and respond to criticism.
    • Why Chat GPT AI does not have the right to subjectivity? It cannot sign a license agreement, guarantee the absence of a conflict of interest, or bear legal responsibility.
    • Only a person. If AI generates a false statement or plagiarism, all responsibility falls on scientists. The argument “the program wrote it that way” is not accepted by editors.

Transparent use of AI: what and where to declare

The use of AI is not prohibited if it is declared.
The main rule of 2026 is radical transparency.

For example: Acknowledgement: “In preparing this work, the author(s) used [TOOL NAME] to [REASON]. After using this tool, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as necessary and take full responsibility for the content of the publication.

    • Generate a literature review “from scratch”.
    • Create scientific illustrations without real data (fabrication)

    • AI for structure, ideas, draft code.
    • Improving the quality (resolution) of your own images. Use of AI by reviewers.

Automated conclusions cannot be the only basis for making ethical decisions; in such cases, additional expert review is carried out.
  • Use of tools to detect AI The editorial team has the right to use specialized  tools to detect texts and images created by AI. At the same time, the results of such checks are not conclusive proof of a violation. In case of doubt, a request may be sent to the author to provide explanations or additional materials.
